Data center

PUE, without the vanity slide.

When someone quotes a single Power Usage Effectiveness figure, ask where the meters sit. The ratio is simple. The boundary is where most teams get into trouble.

The ratio everyone quotes

PUE is total facility energy divided by IT equipment energy over the same period. At 1.0, every watt would go to IT. Cooling, UPS losses, lighting and auxiliaries push the number up. That is the whole definition — short enough to fit on a slide, which is why it gets misused.

Where the number actually lives

A PUE without a boundary is marketing. Whole-facility PUE needs meters at the site edge and at IT load (often PDU or IT UPS output). If you only control a leased floor, one UPS string or one containment aisle, use partial PUE (pPUE) and say so. Same math, smaller fence. Auditors and landlords care about the fence more than the decimal.

Getting a number you can defend

Draw the fence first. Meter both sides for the same interval — a year if you can, so weather and load swings show up. Divide. Write down where each CT or meter sits and how close “IT” is to true IT load. Skip that paperwork and you have an estimate, not a PUE. High-density AI rooms do not change the method; they make a fuzzy IT vs facility split more expensive to ignore.

Key takeaways

  1. PUE = facility energy ÷ IT energy, same period
  2. pPUE is the same idea inside a zone you can actually meter
  3. Trend your own hall — do not rank unrelated sites
  4. No meters, no defended PUE

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a good PUE?

Lower toward 1.0 is the direction of travel, but climate, redundancy and age matter. Your own year-on-year trend beats a global “good” number.

When should we use pPUE instead of PUE?

When you cannot meter or control the whole facility — tenant floors, shared plants, or a single UPS string are typical pPUE cases.

Can we calculate PUE from the utility bill alone?

The bill gives facility energy. Without a matching IT energy meter for the same period, you still cannot close the ratio.
